Living in a hutong, there’s still plenty of parking space for cars.
Living in a hutong, even cars have a place to park. As living standards improve, the number of motor vehicles across the country has surged, turning parking shortages and chaotic parking into pressing issues in urban governance. How can this pressing public‑welfare challenge be alleviated? The difficulty of finding parking has become a common problem that major cities must confront. In Beijing’s Wangfujing district, where land is at a premium, the issue is especially acute. On the east side of Wangfujing Street lies Meizha Hutong, notorious for its traffic jams. With an already narrow roadway, rows of parked cars on both sides make the space even more cramped and difficult to navigate; gridlock is commonplace, and car horns blare incessantly throughout the alley. Even worse, this hutong serves as a vital lifeline for accessing the emergency‑care building.

Cheng Shidong: China’s Policies on Urban Parking Development
I. The Root Causes of Parking Difficulties and Illegal Parking in Chinese Cities 1. The primary reason for parking shortages is the mismatch between the number of vehicles and the availability of parking spaces. Estimates indicate that the nationwide parking deficit—though precise statistics are lacking—is substantial: In Europe and North America, the ratio of vehicles to parking spaces typically stands at 1:1.2 to 1:1.4, whereas in China’s major cities, this ratio is generally around 1:0.7; in smaller and medium-sized cities, compliant parking spaces are even scarcer. On average, each vehicle lacks approximately 0.5 parking spaces. As of the end of 2018, the national vehicle stock had reached 217 million, with privately registered passenger cars accounting for 170 million. Based on these figures, the total parking space shortfall is estimated to exceed 80 million spaces.

The Greater Bay Area is developing smart, seamless parking solutions, unlocking limitless business opportunities in the parking market!
Recently, Shenzhen Bao’an Airport announced a partnership with Alipay to launch a “seamless parking” feature. Drivers no longer need to take a parking card, rummage through their wallets, or even pull out their phones—simply driving into the lot and exiting without interruption. As a result, seamless parking has quickly gained momentum across the Greater Bay Area. Government Planning and Policy Support Provide Strong Momentum Since the release of the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, some have summarized its current state using the phrase “one country, two systems, three currencies, three separate customs territories, and three independent administrative systems.” This unique institutional arrangement, while opening up opportunities and fostering diversity, also poses challenges to the free flow of production factors…

An introduction to various types of multi-story parking garages!
I. Lift-and-Shift Type 1. Two‑Level Lift-and-Shift System: • The two‑level lift-and-shift system is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. • Parking capacity can be increased by more than 180%. • To accommodate simultaneous vehicle entry and exit, configurations of 3 to 6 units are most practical. • The clear headroom beneath the beam must be at least 3,650 mm. • If the lateral platform requires parking with vehicles parked at their full height, the required clearance increases to at least 3,950 mm. • The operating principle of the two‑level lift-and-Shift system is illustrated in the figure below: 2. Three‑Level Lift-and-Shift System: • The three‑level lift-and-Shift system with pit installation is suitable for both indoor and outdoor settings. • Parking capacity can be increased by more than 280%. • To allow for simultaneous vehicle access, configurations of 3 to 6 units are recommended. • Empty

The world’s most advanced fully automated multi‑storey parking structure (Germany)
These two glass towers serve as the new‑car parking facilities for Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg plant in Germany and are part of the Volkswagen Glass Factory. The factory was completed in September 1998, with a total investment of €220 million—covering internal fittings, production equipment, and surrounding infrastructure. To enable customers to observe and oversee every stage of Volkswagen’s manufacturing process, the facility was designed to be entirely transparent and open to public tours. Each of the two cylindrical glass towers stands 42 meters tall and comprises 20 floors, capable of storing 400 brand‑new Volkswagen vehicles. They are connected to an oval‑shaped customer center, and a dedicated elevator system transports cars from the ground floor to the upper levels every 40 seconds.
