Urban Parking
Recently, construction on the smart parking facility and its associated infrastructure along the section of Longcheng Road to Dunhua Road in Qingdao’s Central Business District commenced in June. At present, excavation work is underway. Upon completion, the project will become Qingdao’s first underground, flat‑floor, mobile‑parking smart parking lot, offering more than 400 parking spaces.
According to reports, the smart parking facility and associated infrastructure in the Central Business District are being invested in and developed by Qingdao Municipal Space Group. The project covers an area of 6,625.2 square meters and is planned to have a total floor area of 19,653 square meters, with 3,353 square meters above ground and 16,300 square meters underground. It will feature a new intelligent, multi‑purpose parking structure comprising one floor above ground and four floors below.

The smart parking project’s master plan integrates the urban–industrial integration concept of the central business district. Departing from the conventional rectilinear form of parking structures, it draws inspiration from New York’s High Line—a linear elevated park—creating a wave‑shaped public space above ground to facilitate civic activities. All parking spaces are relocated underground, and amid the dense, high‑rise urban fabric, a park‑like green space is crafted. Beyond providing parking, this design establishes a new urban “living room” for the business district, effectively enhancing the spatial configuration of the central business area.
According to the project leader, the smart parking facility combines traditional self‑driving and intelligent mechanical parking systems, with underground levels connected to adjacent plots via designated access corridors. Upon completion, it will become Qingdao’s first underground, flat‑floor, mobile‑car‑storage smart garage. The project also integrates principles of sponge city design, green building, and smart parking, delivering a high‑quality development that is environmentally friendly, energy‑efficient, and technologically advanced.
According to reports, the project is expected to be completed in June 2020 and handed over for use in July. Upon completion, the smart parking facility will significantly alleviate traffic congestion and parking shortages around the central business district, helping Qingdao’s CBD become a premier area with well-developed supporting infrastructure, an outstanding overall environmental index, and the highest level of integration between industry and urban development.
