As of In June 2019, the nationwide motor vehicle stock reached 340 million, including 250 million automobiles; the number of motor vehicle drivers totaled 420 million, of whom 380 million were automobile drivers.

In the first half of 2019, the national vehicle stock reached 250 million, with private cars accounting for 198 million. As of In June, the number of vehicles in circulation reached 250 million, accounting for 74.58% of all motor vehicles; among them, private cars—small and micro passenger vehicles registered under individual names—numbered 198 million. In the first half of 2019, 12.42 million new vehicles were registered, a decrease of 1.39 million compared with the same period last year.
National In 66 cities, the number of registered vehicles exceeds one million, with 11 cities—including Beijing and Chengdu—surpassing three million. From the perspective of urban distribution, as of In June, there were 66 cities nationwide with a vehicle stock exceeding one million, an increase of eight compared with the same period last year. Among them, 29 cities had more than two million vehicles, and 11 had more than three million. The top cities in terms of vehicle stock are Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Suzhou, Shanghai, Zhengzhou, Shenzhen, Xi’an, Wuhan, Dongguan, and Tianjin; Beijing and Chengdu each have over five million vehicles.
The number of cargo vehicles has reached 26.94 million vehicles—new registrations in the first half of the year reached a record high. As of In June, the number of registered commercial trucks reached 26.94 million, accounting for 10.71% of the total vehicle stock. In the first half of 2019, 1.75 million new commercial trucks were registered, an increase of 30,000 compared with the same period last year, marking another record high.
The number of new energy vehicles in circulation has reached 3.44 million vehicles, with 830,000 new additions in the first half of the year. As of In June, the nationwide stock of new-energy vehicles reached 3.44 million, accounting for 1.37% of the total vehicle fleet. Compared with the end of last year, this represents an increase of 830,000 vehicles, or 31.87%; compared with the same period last year, the increase was 1.45 million vehicles, up 72.85%. Among them, battery electric vehicles numbered 2.81 million, making up 81.74% of the total new-energy vehicle stock.
The volume of vehicle transfer registration continues to rise, and the used-car market remains robust. In the first half of 2019, a total of 11.66 million vehicle transfer registrations were processed nationwide, accounting for 97.4% of all motor vehicle transfer registration transactions. Compared with the same period last year, this represents an increase of 1.44 million cases, or 14.14%, reflecting a sustained growth trend. In the first half of 2019, the ratio of used‑car to new‑car registrations reached 0.94:1, a significant improvement over last year’s 0.74:1, underscoring the growing dynamism of the used‑car market.
The number of motor vehicle drivers has reached 422 million people; in the first half of the year, 14.08 million new drivers obtained their licenses. As the number of motor vehicles continues to rise, the number of motor vehicle drivers has also been increasing in tandem. In the first half of 2019, the number of newly licensed drivers nationwide reached 14.08 million. As of June, the total number of motor vehicle drivers in China stood at 422 million, an increase of 25.76 million compared with the same period last year. In terms of age distribution, the majority of drivers fall within the 26‑to‑50 age range: 144 million are aged 26‑35, accounting for 34.12% of the total; 164 million are aged 36‑50, representing 38.88%; and 12.21 million are over 60, making up 2.9%.
