ETC is all the rage! How far are we from truly cashless tolling on highways?
In early July, Alipay and WeChat announced the launch of free ETC services. As the sweltering summer set in, a wave of enthusiasm for ETC swept across the country. This technology, which had been around for many years, suddenly gained immense popularity—so much so that it was hailed as “the hottest growth opportunity.” The service providers are scrambling to win new customers. ETC, or the Electronic Toll Collection system for highways, enables vehicles to pass through toll booths without stopping by communicating via an onboard electronic tag and an IC card with microwave equipment installed in dedicated ETC lanes, thus realizing fully automated toll collection. The electronic tag—commonly referred to as an OBU—is an onboard device that stores vehicle information and exchanges microwave signals with the specialized equipment mounted on the toll lane.
