Within three years, Dongguan will add no fewer than 180,000 parking spaces.

Within three years, the urban area will add at least 15,000 off-street public parking spaces. In recent years, Dongguan has witnessed a rapid increase in its motor vehicle stock, which has now surpassed 3.1 million, ranking second in the province. Consequently, issues such as worsening traffic congestion, mounting pressure on air pollution control, and the growing prevalence of difficulties in finding parking, prolonged parking durations, and illegal or disorderly parking have become increasingly pronounced. As of June 2018, the city had a total of 1.4662 million parking spaces, with a shortfall exceeding 1.5 million. The “Opinions” propose that by the end of 2022, our city will systematically enhance the precise allocation of parking resources in hospitals, schools, parks, as well as in central urban areas, residential communities, and urban villages, adding new…

More than half of the parking spaces in the residential community are mechanical parking spots, and residents say they were unaware of this when purchasing their homes.

Recently, residents of the Yinhua Mansion development in Guangzhou’s Tianhe District reported that their community has installed “shocking” double‑deck parking spaces—adding a mechanical parking level on top of standard parking spots. Residents say that once a car is parked in the lower level, the upper‑level space becomes completely unusable. As a result, they suspect the developer installed these mechanical bays merely to pad the total number of parking spaces. Many residents also note that such mechanical parking systems are highly inconvenient to use. At Yinhua Mansion, whenever a vehicle occupies a lower‑level spot, the upper‑level space cannot be accessed. Residents find it overly cumbersome to register each parking move with the management, while the developer claims the installation was approved under planning regulations. “This…”

After one year of implementation, Guangzhou’s shared parking program has brought 210,000 parking spaces into the system.

Today, the number of motor vehicles nationwide continues to rise, yet parking shortages remain a persistent challenge in many cities. To address this issue, Beijing has issued the “Guiding Opinions on Paid, Time-Shifted Shared Parking Facilities.” Meanwhile, to boost the utilization rate of parking spaces, Guangzhou introduced the “Parking Lot Regulations” last year, promoting shared parking. But how effective has this initiative been over the past year and more? Encouraging shared parking for more than a year has brought 210,000 parking spaces into the system. In October last year, Guangzhou’s “Parking Lot Regulations” explicitly stipulated: entities—including government agencies, enterprises, and public institutions—should be encouraged, where feasible, to open their privately‑owned parking lots to the public and implement time‑shifted shared parking.

A multi-level public parking facility has been completed in Liunan District, Liuzhou.

On December 3, the three-dimensional public parking project in Liunan District, undertaken by Guangxi Construction Engineering Group Fifth Construction Engineering Co., Ltd., successfully passed its completion acceptance, marking the successful completion of the company’s first large-scale prefabricated steel‑structure multi‑storey parking facility. According to reports, the prefabricated steel‑structure multi‑storey parking project in Liunan District is a key public‑interest initiative for the district. Located at No. 10 Tanzhong West Road, Liuzhou, it has a total floor area of approximately 9,225 square meters, with Buildings 1 and 2 providing parking for 440 vehicles and an additional 50 spaces on the ground level. Once completed and put into operation, the project will significantly increase public parking capacity, effectively alleviating traffic congestion and parking shortages in the vicinity of Tanzhong West Road.

Parking difficulties: the necessity of developing multi‑storey parking garages

Parking difficulties: the necessity of developing multi‑storey parking garages

In urban areas, even a small patch of open space can be turned into a parking lot. If the space is larger, it becomes a sizable parking facility. With China’s large population and growing number of vehicles, some people argue that our car ownership still lags far behind that of the United States. But I’d say: let’s stop comparing ourselves to the U.S. Our cities are already overcrowded—so where will all the additional cars park in the future? Right now, finding parking is difficult, and parking itself is a major challenge—but China’s vehicle fleet continues to grow year after year. So what effective solutions can help ease the conflict between people and vehicles? One practical approach is to develop multi‑storey parking garages. High‑standard, multi‑level parking facilities built at hospitals, government offices, and shopping centers can…

Parking Updates | MIIT: Plans to achieve a 25% share of new energy vehicle sales by 2025

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s website, the ministry recently released the “New Energy Vehicle Industry Development Plan (2021–2035)” (draft for public comment). The draft proposes that by 2025, the competitiveness of the new energy vehicle market will be significantly enhanced, with major breakthroughs in key technologies such as power batteries, drive motors, and in-vehicle operating systems, and that new energy vehicles will account for approximately 25% of total new car sales. The draft further states that, through 15 years of sustained efforts, China aims to bring its core new energy vehicle technologies to an internationally leading level, ensure that its brands and quality are highly competitive on the global stage, and enable China to join the ranks of the world’s automotive powerhouses.
